Betting on the Under-Over 2.5 Goals Market in Soccer
By Phil Renshaw

Sportspunter Arb Service The Arb Service of Choice For Professional ArbersIn recent years, a new soccer betting market has evolved. The under/over 2.5 goals market has become increasingly popular among sports betting enthusiasts and soccer fans. This kind of soccer betting allows punters to try predicting whether or not there will be less than 2.5 goals scored in a match or more than that figure.

Newcomers to soccer betting can be confused by the 2.5 figure after all it is not possible to score this number of goals in a match. The 2.5 figure is just an imaginary one that sits in between the 2 goal and 3 goal marks allowing bettors to bet on both scenarios.

The reason this market has become so popular is that people find it easier to predict how many goals will be scored in a match rather than the eventual result. For example, in a match featuring two very low scoring teams the likelihood is that this trend would continue and goals would be scarce. In contrast games that feature two free scoring teams would be far more likely to see more than 2 goals scored.

If you can spot a team that is consistently involved in games which feature less than 2.5 goals, it is possible to enjoy a high success rate with this form of soccer betting. There have been many examples of outstanding teams who win most of their matches yet still be involved in low scoring encounters.

Finding a team who is a good bet for the under/over 2.5 goals markets is not just about how many goals they score. The defensive aspect is equally important because how many goals a team concedes also plays a large part in whether or not they are regularly involved in low scoring matches.

Because of the popularity of this market, there is now a range of similar ones with the line being set at 1.5 goals, 3.5 goals and even 4.5 goals although they are yet to become as popular as the 2.5 goals market.

In terms of odds these markets provide significant value compared to other soccer markets. If you have a good knowledge of the sport or can carry out some research then betting on the under/over 2.5 goals, market in soccer can be a very profitable activity.

Swansea and Barnsley both let us down last weekend,
drawing their respective matches against Portsmouth and
Watford. However, Port Vale came up trumps in their FA Cup
tie to ensure we had one winning pick, with Micky Adams’
team one to follow this season after a tremendous start.

This week, we have found one value bet in the Championship
thanks to Nottingham Forest and also like the look of Espanyol
and Villarreal in the Spanish Primera Liga.
Both teams are pretty solid at home this season.

Nottingham v Bristol
English Championship
December 4, 2010 – Kick Off 16:00

Nottingham Forest lost 1-0 at Leicester on Monday night,
although manager Billy Davies declared himself happy with
the performance and the Tricky Trees should return to
winning ways against a Bristol City side at the wrong end of
the table. Forest are unbeaten at the City Ground this season
and have won three of their last four home matches. Lewis
McGugan is having an excellent season and Aaron Ramsey
has recently arrived on loan.

City have improved in recent weeks, although they are still
struggling against relegation this term and lost their last away
game 3-1 at Leeds. Although this was followed by home
wins against Leicester and Sheffield United, they might struggle
to contain a Forest side who have plenty of attacking options
and don’t tend to concede many goals.

Best odds for the Nottingham Forest win is 1.80 with Ladbrokes. Prediction: Back Nottingham Forest @ 1.80

Espanyol v Gijon
Spanish La Liga
December 5, 2010 – Kick Off 16:00

It’s something of a surprise to see Espanyol available at such
a big price to continue their 100% record at home this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team have won all six games at
Estadi Cornellà-El Prat and conceded just two goals, suggesting
that they should continue such excellent form against a team who
have collected just two points from six away games to date.
The home side are unbeaten in five and
won away at Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Sporting Gijon have scored just three goals in six away matches
and are showing no signs of picking up that elusive first away
win of the season. Indeed, they have only won two league
matches all term and have tasted defeat in all of their last three
games, including a 3-1 home defeat against Sociedad last weekend.

Best odds for the Espanyol win is 1.73 with WilliamHill. Prediction: Back Espanyol @ 1.73

Villarreal v Sevilla
Spanish La Liga
December 5, 2010 – Kick Off 18:00

The Yellow Submarine should have the upper hand in this match,
especially when you consider that they have won five and drawn
one of their six games at El Madrigal. It is clear that Villarreal
areproving to be the third best team in Spain this season and they
have an excellent defensive record at home which has seen them
concede just two goals. They will be full of confidence
after a 3-0 win in Zaragoza last weekend.

Sevilla are improving after a very slow start to the campaign,
although recent home defeats against Mallorca and Getafe
suggest that all is not right with Gregorio Manzano’s team
who could struggle to match last season’s fourth place.

Best odds for the Villarreal win is 1.91 with Ladbrokes. Prediction: Back Villarreal @ 1.91
